Then Comes Silence - Bye Bye Land (Metropolis Records)

29 October 2026

Then Comes Silence return with “Bye Bye Land,” the third single from their forthcoming eighth album, Requiem Ballroom, out November 20 via Metropolis Records. The Stockholm trio of Alex Svenson, Jonas Fransson and Hugo Zombie build the song around tightly contained verses that open into a larger chorus, giving it the shape of an anthem without letting Svenson’s dark vocal lose its severity.

The song was written for one of Svenson’s closest friends after a life changing trauma brought him to a point where he no longer wanted to live. Svenson has called the song a “slap in the face,” and that description gets much closer to its emotional character than treating it simply as reassurance. He is grateful his friend survived, but gratitude does not erase the fear or anger of having nearly lost him. “Bye Bye Land” lets those feelings exist together.

That contrast is already built into the song. The verses hold closer to Svenson’s low vocal, while the chorus expands around him into something larger and more immediate. The structure wants release, but his voice never turns celebratory. He carries too much knowledge of what nearly happened for that.

That makes “Bye Bye Land” feel less like comfort than confrontation from someone who cares enough to be angry. Svenson is not speaking to a memory. He is speaking to somebody who is still here, somebody who frightened the people around him by nearly disappearing. There is relief in that, but also the bluntness of wanting someone you love to understand the absence they almost left behind.

That is where the song lands hardest. Svenson is grateful his friend survived, but he does not turn that gratitude into softness. “Bye Bye Land” keeps some anger in the room. The love comes through in the fact that he is still speaking directly to him, still insisting that his life matters, and still angry that it came so close to ending.

“Bye Bye Land” follows “Judgement Day” and “Remaker Redeemer” as the final preview of Requiem Ballroom. The album continues Then Comes Silence’s long association with gothic rock and post punk, following 2024’s Trickery and 2022’s Hunger.

Lyrics and music for “Bye Bye Land” were written by Alex Svenson. Svenson performs vocals, bass and synthesizers, with Jonas Fransson on drums and Hugo Zombie on guitar. The track was produced by Svenson, recorded by Jörgen Wall at Kapsylen Studio in Stockholm and mixed by Tom van Heesch. Requiem Ballroom was mastered by Svante Forsbäck.

“Bye Bye Land” is out now via Metropolis Records, released October 16. Requiem Ballroom arrives November 20.
