Ahh, the one that got away! We all have one of those in our lives, the ones that in our quieter and more reflective moments, we still ask ourselves, “What if?” and we occasionally wonder what they might be doing now. And so, “The Day I Found You “ is Tom Tikka’s anthem to lost love.
And so, over his signature indie grooves and contagiously power-pop moves, we follow him around London, listening to him reminiscing and reliving those days, a city where every street is now Memory Lane, every park and shop and building and pavement seems incomplete, a jigsaw with a piece missing, a photograph lacking a certain familiar face.
I’ve said it before, but it is worth repeating: Tom Tikka has the ability to write new songs that sound as if you have been listening to them all your life. “The Day I Found You” is no different, feeling as if it were the long-lost pop gem from a Cars album or an overlooked Nick Lowe b-side.
There is also an unexpected jubilance to the track, perhaps thanks to the double backbeat (something that almost defines the power-pop sound) but also due to the song’s inherent spring and optimism. I’m not sure many could have their hearts broken, and their hopes dashed and turn it into such a jubilant musical affair.
But then Tom Tikka isn’t most people!
