Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it, that’s what they say. And so the opposite must also be true. Those who do understand it can use such lessons wisely. That is certainly the case with Tony Oso, for in him, we find someone who understands the musical past so well that he knows just how to take some of its finest sounds and blend them together to create music that feels part of a great new vision of the future.
“Tears” is the sound of such a process in action. Using an equal amount of new wave eclecticism and classic rock anthemics, clever dynamics and big, sweeping sonic statements, he has created a sound of the past that never happened as a means of ushering in a future that is, obviously, yet to come.
But the future is always arriving, and by mixing 70s rock with 80s post-punk pop, a sort of blend of The Cars’ smart new sound and Led Zeppelin’s sonic hammer of the gods, he has found a way to usher in a sound that is both familiar enough to appeal to listeners’ existing comfort zones and fresh enough to feel like a bold step forward.
