As the soulful and seductive tones rise from this spacious sonic mixing pot to be caught in a more rock and roll drive, the listener is reminded that soul and rock and roll have always made for great traveling companions, both sounds built on passion and power and, when done right, as it is here, poignancy.
They are not only great allies but also the perfect elements to keep each other in check, again as proved by this latest single from True North, “No Exit Wound.” If rock and roll tends to excitably run all over the place, acting bold and boisterous, soul music can tether and seduce its more wayward urges. Similarly, if soul music is often understated and restrained, rock music encourages it to run a bit wild, to throw caution to the sonic winds.
And all of that is precisely what we find here. “No Exit Wounds” is a sensual and sassy celebration of the power of love, that inexplicable force that can cut a man down, put Eros’ metaphorical straight into the heart, the striking by a metaphysical and inexplicable force that leaves, as we are told here, “No Exit Wounds.”
As debut singles go, it’s a masterstroke; rock ‘n’ soul dancing deftly together and leaving no one in any doubt that True North is a band to keep an eye on and an ear open for and Tones Thorburn, the driving force behind the project, a songwriter to be reckoned with.
If this is his calling card and mission statement, his way of setting the tone (pun intended), I’m looking forward to what he does next.
