Proving that it is better to do a few things sublimely than lots of things to more mediocre standards, “Manitowoc,” the new one from Turn Turn Turn is a masterclass in orchestrated brevity. Woven from two intertwined acoustic guitars, spacious beats and bass, and a swooning pedal steel, the vocals are left to deftly dance over a gossamer backdrop.
But far from feeling ambient or overly delicate, these perfectly placed, purposefully poised sounds feel more like the sun streaming through a stained-glass window, a kaleidoscopic wash of elegant sonic hues, intangible but impactful.
A poetic and elemental ode to the town of the same name, the video is a clever mix of engaging performance and grainy film of the shoreline of the place the author dreams of returning to. And of course, “Manitowoc” is as metaphorical as it is literal; each of us has a place whose embrace calls, where we feel safe, a spiritual if not actual home.
