Although better known for other musical projects (Stargazer, Icebridge and Grand Minor) Vatnehall marks the coming together of Svend Skogheim and Tage Johnsen to create something new, and “Back To Life” is the project’s debut single.
As you would expect from a band based around a drummer and bass player, respectively, this is a song with plenty of groove and energy, one that embraces the sound and style of classic rock via low-slung, staccato riffs, and soaring guitar lines, wide-screen sonics and tons of energy.
Yes, “Back to Life” is one-hundred and fifty-three percent groove, that chugging riff, that steady beat, those staccato chops, that sound of relentless bass drives coupled with overall grinding infectiousness, that dynamic vocal range, and those six-string salvos that work their way through the song – a place for everything and everything in its place, as the saying goes.
Now, I’m not saying that there is anything nostalgic or backward glancing about Vatnehall, but they certainly seem to have remembered what makes rock music work, essentially, all the things I have listed above. So, rather than trying to change the rock scape or reinvent the wheel, here is a band content to dig down into the basic lore of rock and roll.
This is not a band that is necessarily doing anything particularly different. This is a band that is doing it better than most of the competition. And that wins every time.
