Violet Night - I Hope You're Well EP (Self-Released)

11 September 2015

Violet Night is a new indie pop group from Vancouver, B.C.; comprised of Connor Pohl (vocals/guitar), also a member of the band City Light Vigil, and TJ Rounthwaite (piano/synths). Although the two friends have talked of doing something together for five years, they just recently set to recording an EP together; the result being the fantastic new, _ I Hope You’re Well_, released last month. On only four songs, the duo manages to convey an incredible amount of warmth and passion. There’s such chemistry between the two, it’s almost as if they’ve been around for decades—so solid is their vision.

The opener “Wait,” is a solid slice of melancholic synthpop, like the best of late-80s Depeche Mode, but it’s a bit more of a divergence than an indicator of their sound. “Dawn” and the title-track “I Hope You’re Well” are two lovely piano ballads that bookend the one true guitar track on the EP, “Comedown.” Predominately acoustic, “Comedown” is similar to something from a band like Death Cab For Cutie. While the songs vary in style, there remains a unifying thread shared in the vision between Pohl and Rounthwaite, and with any luck, this won’t just be a one off collaboration from two musicians with still a lot to do together.
