OFF! – First Four EPs (Vice)
OFF! has been mentioned on these lists several times and this won’t be the last. Finally, a supergroup that lives up to the word.
We Were So Turned On: A Tribute To David Bowie (Manimal Vinyl)
Tribute album with great renditions by noteworthy bands like Warpaint, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Duran Duran, A Place To Bury Strangers and more.
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – “Heart In Your Heartbreak,” (Slumberland)
Single from the band’s upcoming sophomore album Belong. Their self-titled debut was my favorite album last year and this single is the same jangly awesomeness. Download the b-side here
Fucked Up – Year Of The Ox (Merge)
FU’s latest epic 12” in their Zodiac series doesn’t disappoint.
Outrageous Cherry – Seemingly Solid Reality (Alive)
Maybe their strongest album since Out There In The Dark, Matthew Smith once again proves adept at writing catchy psychedelic pop.
Reatards – “Your Bugging Me To Death,” b/w “Such A Creep,” (Goner)
The last single from Jay Reatard‘s first band was a free download in which the A-side was their best song. Download here and be the judge.
T.Rex – The Slider (EMI/Fat Possum)
Not much to be said that hasn’t been said about this classic ad nauseum except it was just reissued by Fat Possum and has never sounded better.
Tyvek – Nothing Fits (In The Red)
In The Red finds another great artist the likes of Jay Reatard and Vivian Girls. Enjoy this Wire-like track from Nothing Fits.
Neil Young – Le Noise (Reprise)
First new album from Young that I have enjoyed in over a decade. The title is apropos because it’s just Neil and his feedback guitar, no drums. He even goes Alice In Chains on us with dropped “D” tuning.
Less Than Zero Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Def Jam)
Bad, depressing movie from a good, depressing book a with cool (for the 80s especially) soundtrack featuring Slayer‘s cover of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,”. But the two highlights are a double dose of Glenn Danzig. First, Roy Orbison sings an amazing Danzig-penned song and then Glenn himself, backed by The Power & Fury Orchestra gives maybe his best ever vocal performance on a track with no distorted guitars.
