Picking up where last fall’s State of Mind EP (which premiered on Big Takeover on September 28, 2018) left off, Dead Heart Bloom return with new single “Run Like Spies”, a dark twist where foreboding piano and anxious vocals presage ominous synth grooves and angular guitar melodies.

The new single sees the band further expanding their sonic palette by seamlessly blending machines with organic instrumentation to create textures that lie somewhere between a more turbulent version of MGMT or Strfkr and the murkier edges of Depeche Mode.

“The song initially came to life as an electronic piece where the vocals were used more as a texture,” says vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Boris Skalsky. Once the band recognized that, “the melody really stood out as a statement, we quickly re-assesed the track, brought the vocals out front, and tightened up the structure.”

The resulting track was written, recorded, and mixed by Skalsky and guitarist/synthesist Paul Wood in the band’s Brooklyn studio.

The new single is out officially on June 7th via Skalsky and Wood’s Ephemeral Arts label which has served as a vehicle for releases by Dead Heart Bloom and other artists’ projects across a number of genres, including classical, space rock, electronic, and experimental music, as well as visual and literary work.

Catch Dead Heart Bloom live in Washington, D.C. at DC9 on June 22 with fellow D.C. natives Strange Boutique.
